The Story Behind Ocaso Festival
At the very end of 2016 we witnessed a huge announcement, big names like Art Department, Lee Burridge, DJ Tennis, among others were coming to Costa Rica for a free festival (that first edition) to be held on Playa Tamarindo. That definitely caught a lot of attention of electronic music lovers. The event became a reality on January 2017 and did not disappoint. Intimate sessions on selected venues and played by many talented international and local artists, giving the event a very special vibe.
We are among to attend the 3rd edition of Ocaso and 2019 promises to be bigger and louder! But have you wondered: Who is behind this great festival? Devin Ellis (Owner and Founder) will give us insights about the festival that changed the scene in Costa Rica.
How did Ocaso started?
«It began as an idea in 2015 when I was in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico for a music festival called BPM. I thought it had some very cool elements and I wanted to bring a similar festival further south to a beach somewhere in Central or South America. I visited many cities in South and Central America to find a location, but the first time I walked down the beach in Tamarindo during sunset I knew we found our home for Ocaso.»- Devin Ellis.
After doing some research about the Costa Rican underground scene, Devin found that Alex Orias and Mauricio De Sostoa were the main guys doing events in Tamarindo. They were introduced by a mutual friend and decided to start planning for the first Ocaso in January 2017, and this is where the story begins.
«Throwing an event in Costa Rica here during the cold North American winter seemed perfect. Tamarindo has by far the best weather in the country so we thought it would be the best location for Ocaso.»Devin Ellis
What do you remember the most about the first Ocaso back in 2017?
«The energy of the crowd, especially at the very end when Doc Martin played his closing set at La Senda. I have traveled to festivals all over the globe for the past 25 years and I have not felt energy like that in a long long time. It reminded me of the energy from the Los Angeles underground scene during the mid-90’s, which to me is the best there has ever been in the US.» – Devin Ellis.
Who has impressed you the most of the artists that have played magical venue such as La Senda?
«Well I would say if there is one person who has really captured the hearts of the people at La Senda it has been the sunrise closing sets from Doc Martin. He has absolutely crushed it both times (2017 & 2018).» – Devin Ellis.
«We have something very special in store for you in 2019 and can guarantee Doc Martin will not disappoint.»Devin Ellis
We always had an idea that a festival with electronic underground music would be a success in our country, but in our wildest dreams thought it would happen with such high standards.
Had the opportunity to listen and dance to some huge sets for example Cristoph on 2017. We traveled with a party of passionate ravers from San Jose to Tamarindo just to be part of the festival on Sunday’s closing. It was all worth the while to complete that rally. A day we all cherish!
For sure we came back on 2018, being at the La Senda was impressive and magical. That first experience of entering the amphitheater is a feeling that does not envy any other festival around the world. So many quality sets like Desert Hearts takeover, Jay Lumen, or superstar Claptone.
Ocaso has grown in reputation and has called the attention of many people who will experience the festival for the first time. We are sure that 2019 will be massive!
